The implementation of a workplace program requires long term planning. Consider our four condoms planning scenarios.

Total Population
(2007 estimate)

6,331,000

Population aged 15-49
(2007 estimate)

3,197,000

Reproductive age Males

1,598,500

Total formal workforce 2009 estimate

250,000

Total Males in formal sector workforce (65%)

162,500

BAHA Scenario 1 – 100% condom use by all men

If we assume all 1,598,500 men of reproductive age in PNG protect their partner from unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection every time they have sexual intercourse (average rate of sexual intercourse is 12 times per month)

Then PNG requires

condoms per year

Number of 20 foot containers annually

Number of 40 foot containers
annually

19,182,000

230,184,000

BAHA Scenario 2 – 20% PNG men 100% condoms use

In this scenario one in five (20%) of all PNG men of reproductive age use a condom each time they have sexual intercourse (average rate of sexual intercourse 12 times per month)

Then PNG requires

Number of 40 foot containers

3,836,400

If PNG workplaces drive condom distribution to formally employed men and urban males the two more scenarios are possible…

BAHA Scenario 3 – 100% condom use by all 162,500 employed men

If we assume all 162,500 formally employed men of working age in PNG protect their partner from unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection every time they have sexual intercourse (average rate of sexual intercourse is 12 times per month)

Then employers need to help distribute

condoms per year

Number of 20 foot containers

Number of 40 foot containers

1,950,000

BAHA Scenario 4 – BAHA’s goal 20% success rate in condom education for employed men

32, 500 (20%) of all employed men are educated and trained through their HIV workplace program and have access to a consistent supply of male condoms and choose to protect their partner from unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection every time they have sexual intercourse (average rate of sexual intercourse is 12 times per month)

BAHA Scenario 5 – all male workers and all urban male non workers use condoms

All 270,200 working males and non working urban males (162,500 formally employed men and all 107,700 non working urban male - 7.5% of reproductive age population living in urban areas) have free and easy access to condoms supplied by worksites through RED buckets or similar simple distribution system.

In this scenario we assume 15% of the non working population of reproductive age live in urban areas or near a worksite.  There fore 239,775 (7.5% of urban male community – not in work force)

All Worksites distribute with easy access supply system
