Susu Mamas PNG Incorporated is a non profit, non-government organization dedicated to reducing PNG's high infant mortality rate. It has been operating for 33years

Services that they provide?
Susu Mamas employs five dedicated and highly trained nurses who provide free education and counseling to around 8500-10000 in a month;

  1. breast feeding
  2. nutrition
  3. infant feeding including HIV positive mothers
  4. hygiene
  5. antenatal asnd postnatal care
  6. immunisation
  7. family planning
  8. voluntary counseling and testing (VCT)

Drop In Centre Project: Susu Mamas run a drop in centre which is located within the grounds of PMGH. The drop in centre offers a Susu Mamas on duty nurse from Monday to Friday. Nurses provide counseling to mothers/fathers and other family members. Nurses also provide telephone counseling. Susu Mamas is administered from its headquarters which is located at the Drop In Centre. In 2008, Susu Mamas achieved accreditation as a VCT site and now also offers a toll free counseling and referral service to PNG.

Other services

Susu Mama nurses visit the PMGH on a daily basis (Mon-Fri) They visit the Labour Ward, Ward 11-Post Natal Ward, Ward 10-Antenatal Ward, Special Care Nursery and Children's Ward. Nurses visit the wards from Monday to Friday and conduct one on one counseling to mothers. Nurses hand out baby books and introduce our services and provide referrals when needed.>

Urban Clinic Project: Susu Mama nurses visit 15 urban health clinics, daily on a roster system (according to the antenatal day of the clinic). Nurses spend approximately 3 hours at a clinic and provide group talks as well as one on one counseling.
Outreach Project-Settlements: Nurses visit settlement areas and conduct education sessions tailored to the specific requests of the community usually through church groups or women's group. Community outreach programs occur weekly on Wednesdays. There are currently 21 communities involved in this project.

Outreach Project-HIV: Susu Mamas nurses assist HIV positive mums and their babies by providing referrals, support and feeding options. Contact is usually through the Drop In Clinic and continues with home visits with visits of up to 3 hours 1 to 2 times per week.

Outreach Project-Special Needs Mothers: Nurses conduct home visits to mothers identified with special needs, such as premature babies or multiple births. Visits are conducted as necessary.

Workshops Project: Nurses conduct five 3 days workshops for community members per year. Participant numbers are 25-30 per workshop and topics vary from each workshop but include breastfeeding, good nutrition and caring for babies and children.
