Tubercolosis is a curable but highly contagious bacterial infection.
If you have signs and symptoms of TB then you should get checked for TB immediately.
The health worker may suggest you have an HIV test. This is known as Provider Initiated Counselling and Testing
for HIV (PICT).
How to get a TB test
All Health Centres or Aid Posts can check you for TB. If they do not offer testing themselves they will transport the specimen/slides to a testing centre. It may not be necessary for patients to have to go to the testing centres themselves. You will be registered at the health centre nearest to you for treatment. The treatment in PNG is known as DOTS.
What is DOTS?
Direct Observation of Treatment. Someone with infectious TB can be supported by health and community workers or trained volunteers in your workplace.
They can observe and record patients swallowing the full course of the correct dosage of anti-TB medicines (treatment may last six to eight months) |
