What does "Voluntary" mean?
In general, an HIV test can only be performed on a person if that person is given pre-test information and counselling and if, after receiving that information, she or he freely agrees to the test.
Pre-test information is information about:
- What are HIV and AIDS?
- What is an HIV test and what is it for?
- What will happen to me during the test?
- When will I get the results of the test?
- What are some of the legal and social issues surrounding HIV/AIDS?
- The fact that sexual partners may have to be contacted to inform them of the test if the result is positive;
- How can I preventy HIV transmission?
(ref HAMP Act Users Guide pg 12)
On the list provided are some accredited centres that you can access VCCT services such as counselling, testing, care and support and ART supply. The accredited VCCT centre will send blood samples to the nearest Laboratory for confirmation if a reactive result is obtained after undergoing a rapid test.
VCCT is a FREE service. If you ask for an HIV test at a private clinic please ask about fees.
Remember: There is Pre-Test counselling and Post Test counselling for everyone who wants to have an HIV test. |
