‘Relax! You’re taking big chances by sleeping with so many men. There is a disease out there that is going to kill thousands of people in this country if we don’t change our attitude. I hope you at least use condoms when you sleep with all those guys.’
Vavine wondered how may of them used condoms all the time. How many of these girls were, like her, already on death row!

HIV/AIDS is reaching epidemic proportions in our country. David Lornie is to be congratulated for this fast-paced, uncompromising and honest novel. The disturbing events that surround Vavine in her struggle for survival are common in PNG. This is a novel that deserves to be widely read, particularly by high school students, as the awareness it brings will serve as a sober warning about HIV/AIDS and its human cost. (Dame Carol Kidu DBE)

As the main advocate for national action on HIV and AIDS, the National AIDS Council of PNG and its Secretariat are pleased to support Vavine’s Curse. It is a novel that will spread awareness of this deadly disease amongst our vulnerable youth in terms they can understand. Michael Aglua, Co-ordinator, National AIDS Council, Port Moresby.

Vavine’s story is one of challenge and courage. There are no nice bits here. Vavine’s story describes many of the challenges that confront young women in PNG everyday. HIV and its related themes of violence, sex and drug abuse adds to the complex mix of challenges that young women like Vavine face everyday. In this story, bad, fat, greedy men who show little respect for anything, set the stage for a tale of young women struggling in a place where opportunities for a creative, independent and accomplished life are almost out of reach. Dr Ann Clarke, General Manager, Papua New Guinea Business Coalition against HIV & AIDS.

I grieve for the children of PNG; for the ones infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. They have a right to protection and care, and we adults are duty bound to give them a future. That is our obligation and privilege. Fr. Jude Ronayne-Forde OFM, Simon of Cyrene Centre.
